Throughout his GRAMMY-winning career\, Whalum served as the go-to saxophonist for artists like Whitney Houston\, Luther Vandross\, and Quincy Jones. \n\n\n\nBeyond his musical achievements\, Whalum’s career has been a testament to his commitment to community service. He actively shares his passion for music with future generations as a music professor. An ordained minister\, Whalum shares his daily Bible readings through his podcast “Bible In Your Ear.” He is passionate about inspiring young musicians\, and currently teaches at Visible Music College in Memphis. \n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome Whalum back “home” to Stax Music Academy\, and we look forward to seeing you all on the 27th.

The Soulsville Foundation carries the Stax Records legacy forward by ensuring the current and next generation perpetuate the R&B sound through music education. This year as the Stax Museum celebrates 20 years\, Stax Records released Written in Their Soul\,  one of the most important behind-the-scenes music documentations of songwriting at Stax Records. The 7-CD box set is an all-new collection that brings together 146 demos from the Stax Records vaults highlighting the strength of the songwriting talent at the legendary label. The release was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in November in both the Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album categories. The songwriters represented include William Bell\, Eddie Floyd\, Deanie Parker\, Bobby Manuel\, and Henderson Thigpen\, all of whom participated in a panel discussion at the Stax Museum on June 23\, the day the CD box set became available.

SUMMARY:LIVE MUSIC & CONVERSATION WITH THE MAD LADS & 926\, THE STAX MUSIC ACADEMY ALUMNI BAND
DESCRIPTION:The Invaders youth organization founded in 1967 impacted communities across Memphis by working to improve conditions for the city’s poorest residents. In 1968\, the group worked closely with the Sanitation Workers Strike to assist with their call for the right to organize\, which ultimately brought Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. to Memphis. Among its members was veteran John Gary Williams\, who worked as the Minister of Defense for the Invaders.  Prior to joining the group\, Williams was the lead singer of The Mad-Lads at Stax Records. At the same time the Invaders were growing\, Williams was busy cranking out songs at Stax; The Mad-Lads had success with hits such as “Don’t Have to Shop Around” and “I Want Someone.” \n\n\n\nWilliams is perhaps best known musically for his 1972 solo LP at Stax and the single “The Whole Damn World is Going Crazy”\, recorded after a short prison sentence. However\, within the community of Soulsville and beyond\, Williams is best remembered as a family man\, a minister\, and a counselor to his fellow community members. His is a story of love for sweet soul music\, dedication to helping others\, and second chances as a singer\, community leader\, and a believer in a better world. \n\n\n\nThis two-night celebration of John Gary Williams’ legacy begins Thursday\, October 26 with a screening of Prichard Smith’s 2015 documentary The Invaders at Crosstown Theater at 7:00PM\, released this year on Mass Appeal and narrated by Nas.  The following evening\, on Friday\, October 27\, a very special event will be held at the Stax Museum\, celebrating both The Mad-Lads and The Invaders with live music by the new Mad-Lads and the Stax Music Academy Alumni Band. The evening will include a live performance\, a panel discussion\, and a new Invaders exhibit containing Williams’ Mad-Lads stage suit jacket\, his Invaders’ jacket and more. Doors open at 6 pm to allow attendees to enjoy the new exhibition followed by the event at 7 pm.

The Douglass Theatre was constructed and owned by an African American\, Charles Henry Douglass\, who opened the facility’s doors in 1921 to offer vaudeville\, jazz\, blues\, and R&B\, and soul music. \n\n\n\nThis extraordinary legacy gets a special cinematic treatment in the documentary Mr. Douglass’s Théâtre\, which chronicles Douglass living and thriving during the Jim Crow South\, despite a KKK-financed bounty on his head as well as resisting a mob that deposited the lynched body of a Black man in the lobby of his hotel. \n\n\n\nThe film frames his unique life\, from his birth soon after the Civil War in 1870 to his rise as a national business figure and Macon’s first Black millionaire to the time of his death in 1940.  Painstakingly researched and artfully told\, the documentary opens with Douglass’ story\, and it continues to the present-day\, where the theatre operates as a vital part of the cultural and entertainment scene in Macon.

Admission during that time is free for everyone. \n\n\n\nChildren of all ages are treated to: \n\n\n\n\nLive music indoors and outside\n\n\n\nFood trucks\n\n\n\nArts & crafts\n\n\n\nBouncy houses\n\n\n\nFace painting\n\n\n\nBalloon artists\n\n\n\nGames\n\n\n\nOther activities throughout the afternoon\n\n\n\n\nThis Family Day\, we are being supported by. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris’ Nonprofit Committee. Mayor Harris established the committee in 2021 to bring together representatives from over 150 nonprofit organizations to establish a committee that would strategically align the work they do\, identify barriers by providing services\, and formulate concrete solutions to problems. Its subcommittees include Arts and Culture\, Youth and Education\, and  Health and Community Services.  \n\n\n\nOn May 13 we will host numerous other arts groups and nonprofits\, and there will be food trucks\, games and activities\, arts & crafts for children\, bouncy houses\, face painting\, balloon artists\, and live music inside the Stax Museum and in our outdoor amphitheater. \n\n\n\nAdmission for everyone will be free 1-4 pm. \n\n\n\nThe May 13 Family Day is also a celebration of the new partnership between the Stax Museum and WDIA of iHeart Media. As we celebrate the Stax Museum’s 20th Anniversary\, and the nation’s first station for African American programming celebrates its 75th Anniversary\, look for more events with the station including a WDIA memorabilia exhibit this fall. WDIA helped promote Stax Records back in the day and without them Stax may never have been so successful. The station will be at Family Day with a live remote and on-air personalities like the legendary Stan Bell and Bev Johnson. \n\n\n\nFamily Day allows children and their families to enjoy more exposure to the arts. Visitors also learn more about Memphis history and the role Stax Records played\, which includes much of the Civil Rights Era. \n\n\n\nShelby County Mayor Lee Harris said\, “The arts allow children\, adults\, and families to experience new worlds. One of the missions of Shelby County’s Nonprofit Committee is to open up those worlds to more people. It’s at events\, like Stax Museum’s Family Day\, where the arts and culture that abound in our community become more accessible to all.” \n\n\n\n“It has become one of our most popular days of the month\,” said Stax Museum executive director Jeff Kollath. “We offer free admission for Shelby County residents every Tuesday 1-5 pm\, but this gives parents\, grandparents\, aunts and uncles and others more time to come see us on a weekend\, learn a little more about the music created at Stax and its history\, and just enjoy themselves.” \n\n\n\nFamily Day gives visitors access to the entire museum\, which has a newly renovated introductory theater\, lobby\, gift shop\, and lounge. SUMMARY:A Stone Groove: The Photography of Alan Copeland
DESCRIPTION:Clarence Nelson of Prince Gabe & The Millionaires. Photo by Alan Copeland.\n\n\n\nAlan Copeland was as much of an artist as a musician. Often seen with a camera around his neck at concerts throughout Memphis\, Copeland’s photographs\, largely taken between 1965 and 1990\, show a love for music and the men and women who made it. The Stax Museum now holds the entire Alan Copeland Collection that includes thousands of photographs on Ektachrome slides and 35mm film. \n\n\n\nCopeland was an accomplished drummer. He played with the Poor Little Rich Kids\, who recorded a single on HIP\, a Stax Records subsidiary\, in early 1968. His photographs of the Stax offices and control room are some of the most intimate and unique interior images of the original studio held by the Stax Museum. After serving in the Army\, Copeland returned to Memphis and his drums\, playing for Jerry Lee Lewis; Canyon\, a local country band; and the popular nightclub band\, the Memphis Hurricanes. \n\n\n\nOne of Copeland’s striking photo shoots was at the July 4\, 1971 concert at Overton Park bandshell headlined by Deep Purple. Copeland circled the Shell with his cameras\, finding desired vantage points from behind and alongside the stage and among the massive crowd. Copeland’s work has the elements and charm of a professional photographer\, yet a kind swagger that highlights his personal affection for the subjects and the music they made.. \n\n\n\nIncluded in the collection are photographs of local musicians such as Booker T. and the MG’s\, The Memphis Horns\, Prince Gabe\, and Ma Rainey II. Copeland also captured touring acts such as Buffalo Springfield\, Albert King\, The Allman Brothers Band\, and Deep Purple at the Overton Park Shell\, the Mid-South Coliseum\, Club Paradise\, and Mud Island. \n\n\n\nThe Stax Museum thanks Suzanne Copeland for the donation of her husband’s work following his untimely passing in early 2022. This exhibition is possible due to her generosity. \n\n\n\nMORE INFORMATION:Collections Manager Leila Hamdan chose a group of slides and film strips to be digitized while she processed the collection for the museum.  “Most of the slides and strips were not labeled so I spent quite a bit of time using my creative method to discern the artists and locations. There are quite a few exciting sub-collections”\, according to Hamdan\, “such as the series of photographs taken of Beale Street in 1977 in the daylight\, dynamic promotional shots of The Millionaires who performed with Prince Gabe\, as well as\, a set from Club Paradise featuring the late Albert King and includes cameos of the famed Memphis culture maker and entrepreneur Sunbeam Mitchell. “There is one black and white portrait of two women at work on that day. I was hopeful it was Earnestine and Hazel\, however\, I have not been able to confirm their identities\, yet. Though I am confident I will find out one day.  Perhaps what is most exciting to me about this entire collection is how undeniably cool it is and how utterly Memphis.”

DESCRIPTION:Les Paul Thru the Lens explores the life of pioneering musician and innovator Les Paul. Through a series of 24 photographs\, visitors will see a chronicle of Paul’s life\, career\, and achievements: his early performances as Red Hot Red\, his marriage to and work with Mary Ford\, his explorations in the recording studio and with the electric guitar\, and of course his long and influential performing career. Collectively\, the images provide an intimate view into the life of an icon of the music and sound products industry and remind us that\, through it all\, music—and the industry—are inseparable from the people who make it. \n\n\n\nIn the photo at left: In January 1952\, “Tiger Rag” hit the charts for Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford. It was one of the first recordings where Mary and Les used the new Gibson solid body electric guitars instead of the klunker guitars. Capitol Records arranged this publicity photo with a Hollywood tiger. Les relayed that Mary was terrified of the tiger.

Lordi proposes a new understanding of this famously elusive concept. In the 1960s\, Lordi argues\, soul came to signify a cultural belief in black resilience\, which was enacted through musical practices—inventive cover versions\, falsetto vocals\, ad-libs\, and false endings. Through these soul techniques\, artists such as Aretha Franklin\, Donny Hathaway\, Nina Simone\, Marvin Gaye\, Isaac Hayes\, and Minnie Riperton performed virtuosic survivorship and thus helped to galvanize Black communities in an era of peril and promise. Niambi Steele\, and Zach Schoenfeld \n\n\n\nIn 1973\, Enterprise Records\, a subsidiary released a landmark LP that would\, over time\, help change the face of Black music. The 24-Carat Black\, a group of more than a dozen young musicians from Cincinnati\, and their producer\, Dale Warren\, created Ghetto: Misfortune’s Wealth\, a genre-bending\, orchestral soul masterpiece that\, due to Stax’s financial troubles\, never received the support it needed to gain listeners. Fast forward 20 years to the 1990s: hip-hop DJs have discovered the deep grooves\, powerful vocals\, and pointed political commentary and sampled it for their own recordings. Since then\, Kendrick Lamar\, Jay-Z\, Digable Planets\, and many more have sampled The 24-Carat Black. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a roundtable discussion with three former band members – Princess Hearn\, Jerome Derrickson\, and C. Niambi Steele – and author Zach Schoenfeld\, who wrote the definitive biography of the band for the University of Texas Press’ 33 1/3 series.

Flowers is the “High Hoodoo of Memphis\,” using a fusion of Delta-based oral traditions\, such as blueswork\, storytelling\, spoken word\, and Black Baptist oratory with musical accompaniment. DESCRIPTION:Churches\, schools\, homes and landmarks where Black Tennesseans fought for fundamental freedoms during the civil rights era are now the centerpiece of The Official U.S. Civil Rights Trail Book\, which will be introduced to the Memphis community during a public program at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music on Tuesday\, August 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. CT. Museum admission for Shelby County residents is free on Tuesday afternoons between 1 and 5 p.m. \n\n\n\nSoulsville Foundation Deputy Director Pat Mitchell Worley will moderate a panel discussion that spotlights the city’s significant role in the civil rights movement\, discuss the importance of preserving historic landmarks and celebrate recent Tennessee additions to the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. \n\n\n\nThe program will begin at 2 p.m. when Stax Music Academy students honor musicians from the period by performing songs first recorded at Stax Records. Following the panel discussion\, Lee Sentell will sell and sign copies of his book to benefit the Stax Museum. The Official U.S. Civil Rights Trail Book\, a 128-page page hardcover book\, includes an entire section devoted to Memphis’s role in the movement as one of the 14 cities profiled. \n\n\n\n“My sisters and I were actively involved in Memphis’s civil rights movement throughout the 1960s\,” said Elaine Lee Turner. “What began as regular sit-ins\, which usually consisted of the Lee family\, became marches from Memphis to Jackson\, MS\, alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights activists. The peace that Dr. King exuded gave us the courage and confidence to continue being part of this brave movement. Today\, that sense of peace and pride remains with me in my work to educate the Memphis community and our visitors about our city’s rich civil rights legacy.” \n\n\n\nTo kick off Black History Month in 2022\, tourism officials joined together to announce several new landmarks along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail\, including the Stax Museum. Situated on the former site of Stax Records\, the tiny movie-theater-turned-recording-studio in South Memphis produced numerous hits that continue to stir souls today. \n\n\n\n“Stax is a phenomenal destination and\, through the power of the music of the movement\, visitors can learn about the Civil Rights legacy\,” said Mark Ezell\, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development and secretary/treasurer of the U.S. Civil Rights Trail Marketing Alliance. “The history of Stax Records is moving and as important to Tennessee as rock and roll\, blues\, country\, gospel and other genres for which the state is known internationally. Stax also interprets an important story about inclusion\, successful integration\, Civil Rights and African American achievements. What happened in Tennessee changed the world. We’re proud to include Stax along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail and draw thousands of visitors from around the world.” \n\n\n\nTennessee Tourism also teamed up with Travel South and Ingredient Creative on a mini podcast series about the state’s civil rights legacy. In episode one\, listeners can learn more about Memphis\, the role of music and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and legacy. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the museum\, the trail features five other Memphis landmarks\, including the National Civil Rights Museum\, Clayborn Temple\, WDIA Radio Station\, Mason Temple Church of God in Christ and Beale Street Historic District\, all of which played instrumental roles in the local movement. \n\n\n\n“Memphis has a deep and complex civil rights history\, and\, as an educator for more than 20 years\, I’m grateful to work at the National Civil Rights Museum\, where we provide a sacred space for visitors to interrogate this history\,” said Dr. Russell Wigginton\, president of the National Civil Rights Museum. “At the museum\, it is our responsibility to continue honoring Dr. King and others who fought for civil rights and social justice. We also are committed to making those experiences relevant today and tomorrow as our nation and world continue the journey to be a more inclusive\, equitable place.” \n\n\n\nDesigned to bring to life the stories and history of the American civil rights movement\, the hardcover book showcases more than 200 iconic photographs captured by former Southern Living photographer Art Meripol. The Memphis chapter guides readers through local demonstrations on Beale Street\, Dr. King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech and his tragic assassination at the Lorraine Motel. \n\n\n\nSentell\, who authored the book in 2021 and has served as Alabama tourism director for nearly 20 years\, began organizing the trail in partnership with 14 neighboring state tourism agencies in 2007\, making the trail the first of its kind. The trail has garnered regional and international acclaim since its 2018 launch. \n\n\n\n“I’m honored to speak with civil rights educators and foot soldiers at the Stax Museum where Black and white artists worked together to create music during an era of egregious segregation and racism in Memphis\,” said Lee Sentell. “A newly added trail site\, the Stax Museum offers an incredible collection of remarkable stories through the lens of music that will continue to attract local\, national and international visitors to Memphis while traveling along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.” \n\n\n\nThe U.S. Civil Rights Trail book was published by Alabama Media Group in partnership with the Alabama Tourism Department.
