May 7 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm CDT

This special event is an evening with David Porter, featuring a conversation on the making of his autobiography, The Soul Man: Life of Songwriter David Porter, along with stories behind ten photographs from the Stax Museum collection. A book signing will follow, with copies available for purchase on-site.
As the first staff songwriter at Stax Records, David Porter co-created some of the most enduring songs in soul music history, including “Soul Man,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” and “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby.” His work not only defined a generation but continues to influence artists across genres today, with hundreds of samples appearing in modern music.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of soul music, a student of music history, or simply curious about the stories behind one of Memphis’s most influential cultural institutions, this evening offers a rare chance to experience Stax through the eyes of someone who helped build its legacy.
This is event is free to attend and open to the public.
