A Celebration of Duane Allman & King Curtis

November 10, 2022 @ 6:30 pm – November 10, 2022 @ 8:30 pm

Conversation, listening session, and book signing with authors Bob Beatty and Timothy Hoover

One of the greatest collaborations of the late 1960s was between King Curtis Ousley, the R&B saxophone master, and Duane Allman, the slide guitar prodigy whose musical vision transcended genre. Their paths crossed when both were highly sought-after sessions musicians for Atlantic Records. Both Southerners – Ousley from Texas, Allman from Florida – these artists looked at music as a space for collaboration, and as a blank canvas to express what lie deep in their souls. Sadly, Ousley and Allman died within two months each other in 1971 just as both were experiencing the greatest success of their careers.

Join us for this special conversation with authors Bob Beatty (Play All Night: Duane Allman and the Journey to the Fillmore East) and Timothy Hoover (Soul Serenade: King Curtis and His Immortal Saxophone) who will discuss each artist’s significance, their collaborations in the studio and on stage, and select recordings that best highlight each artist’s true genius.

Held at the Memphis Listening Lab at Crosstown Concourse, 2nd Floor; 1350 Concourse Ave.
